It is a small, transparent dark green crystalline mass, often glassy. It was formed when a giant meteorite struck the earth. Heat of impact metamorphosed surrounding rocks, creating a "strew field", flinging the resulting crystals over a vast area. It is one of the rarest varieties of tektite formed over 15 million years ago, and is the only known "gem quality" stone of extra-terrestrial origin. This is a rare stone and will become extinct.
